About Aranmula

Aranmula represents the apex heritage of Kerala. Situated at the beautiful wetland ecosystem on the banks of the holy river Pampa it presents the epitome of Kerala culture. Located in south central Kerala it is in a region where the agrarian culture, performing arts and ancient temple rituals makes it an apex model of human evolution. One of the most sought after tourist events of Kerala Aranmula Boat Race, the oldest boat race in Kerala, is held here and is linked to the river valley culture here. A flagship destination of tourism departments of the state and union governments Aranmula is one of the sought after global tourism destinations. It is also close to the famous forest shrine Sabarimala.
The famous Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the country. The tangible and intangible heritages from rituals, performing art, crafts all make it a contender for showcasing human heritage. It is also an undying continuity closely guarded by the people, it has through history withstood all attempts to diminish its eminence. One of the well known names in the crafts here is the metal mirror, Aranmula Kannadi. The color, gaiety and rhythm of the boat race during the Onam festival is an enthralling experience. Historically this ancient temple town has been celebrated by poets and travelers alike through the last several centuries. This is sacred land, unique in the world, a bath in the river here washes off one’s sins, cures diseases, makes one energetic, tells Aranmula Vilasom Hamsa Geetham, a work from the 12 th century CE.
With a highly sustainable and eco-friendly life style, a culture evolved through generations, efforts are on to get World Heritage status for Aranmula from the UNESCO. It was accorded heritage status by the UNDP - Govt. of India a decade back. Aranmula Paithruka Grama Karma Samithy, Aranmula Heritage Village Action Council, a group of eminent persons from Aranmula, is aiming at conservation and promotion of the priceless heritages of Aranmula and restore the nature here which is facing degradation after adverse human interventions in the region. Once with plentiful water, the river a route of navigation, the water levels have fallen alarmingly and the ground water regimes are also severely affected. Paddy cultivation, mainstay of the region, is also affected. There are also efforts to revive the symbiotic mutually linked eco-culture and ecology here. In the efforts to promote the priceless heritage the Samithy is looking for the cooperation of likeminded groups and individuals across the state, country and the world. Please join the mission.
